Incidence of Epiretinal Membranes after Phacoemulsification with Implantation of an Intraocular Lens – The ERM Phaco Trial

Phacoemulsification with implantation of an intraocular lens is one of the most common surgeries in ophthalmology. Jahn et al. demonstrated that 12% of patients after phacoemulsification developed epiretinal membranes (ERM). Nevertheless, the study of Jahn et al. has limitations, such as that patients with ECCE, an elder technique of cataract surgery, were included into the study, among a lot of patients both eyes were analysed, but not in all patients, and diagnosis of ERM was performed with fundoscopy. OCT offers higher precision and repeatability in diagnosis of ERM compared to fundoscopy.
